20th October 1973 - Day 15

Israel destroys over a hundred Syrian, Iraqi, and Jordanian tanks in a failed Arab offensive in the north, as Israeli units begin the encirclement of the entire Egyptian 3rd Army, still situated on the east bank of the Suez where President Sadat insisted it should remain.
The United Nations pushes for a ceasefire as both the Americans and Soviets agree on the need to avoid an escalation.

22nd October 1973 - Day 17

Mount Hermon falls to the Israelis, effectively ending the war on the Golan Heights.
In the south, the IDF fans out to strike SAM sites allowing greater advances prior to an expected ceasefire.
A United Nations ceasefire comes into effect in the early evening but is quickly violated with both sides blaming each other.
The Scud missile is first used in combat, fired from Egypt into Israeli army positions.

23rd October 1973 - Day 18

The ceasefire breaks down and Israel resumes it`s offensive into Egypt, now just 100km from Cairo and, in the north, shelling the outskirts of Syrian capital; Damascus with long range M107 self-propelled guns.
The threat being posed to two Arab capital cities causes growing alarm in Moscow.

24th October 1973 - Day 19

The Soviets threaten to unilaterlly send intervention forces to support the Syrians and Egyptians. The Americans put the 82nd Airborne Division on alert to counter such a move, and typical Cold War escalation sees each side respond to the other`s moves with greater threat. America sets `DEFense CONdition 3` for the first time since the Cuban Missile Crisis, and places it`s nuclear forces on alert.
In Washington, President Nixon is facing impeachment over the Watergate break-in. He is depressed, drinking heavily, and barely cognisant for much of the time. It is everyone`s good fortune that U.S. foreign policy is now effectively run by the highly capable Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, who talks directly to Soviet premier Leonid Brezhnev.
Both sides agree to force their allies in the region to accept a new ceasefire.
The 1973 `Ramadan`, `Yom Kippur` or `October` war ends.

Aftermath of the 1973 war.

The nineteen days of fighting left around 20,000 dead, and around 45,000 wounded from both sides.
Material losses were far higher on the Arab side, helped by the fact that Israel still held the terrain and could salvage equipment that belonged to both sides. Post-war, Israel would form battalions of re-engineered T-55 and T-62 tanks captured from the Arabs.
The 1973 conflict had a profound affect on military thinking. Guided weapons and electronic warfare went from the fringes to being the central pillars of defence planning for air, land, and sea operations around The World.
The Gulf oil producers had sent small forces to the war, which were often ineffective, but the real success of the Gulf states was the oil embargo which instantly quadrupled the price of oil, and led to a shift in the balance of power in relationships from the old western colonials towards the oil-rich Arab monarchies such as Saudi Arabia.
Egypt gravitated from the Soviet influence to American, leaving Syria as the only Soviet (subsequently Russian) proxy in the region. Egypt regained the Sinai as part of a peace deal with Israel, and the Egyptian military regained the respect of it`s people, despite the war going badly from Day 8 onwards.
In 1981, President Sadat was murdered by Egyptians for his peace deal with Israel; ironically as he watched an anniversary parade celebrating the Suez Crossing of 1973.
Israel had turned military disaster into military victory in just under three weeks but most commentators agree that the country was never the same again, losing the national unity that had prevailed up till then. Previous decades of liberal governments were replaced by several decades of mostly hardline right-wing coalitions that continue to this day. When Prime Minister Rabin attempted a rapprochement with the Palestinians in the 1990s he, like Sadat, was murdered by a fellow countryman opposed to the peace deal. Israel was never seriously threatened with invasion again, and the United States pledged to maintain Israel`s qualitative military edge over it`s neighbours.
Syria continued as a repressive regime ruled by the Assad dynasty, leading to the current civil war.

The lasting peace deal between one-time intractable foes such as Israel and Egypt proves that all things are possible, although many other examples exist of the problems still faced by the region.
