The Official DWC `CRUEL SEAS` Thread

Postby WingAttackPlan-R » Tue Dec 04, 2018 12:37 am

Came across Wargames Illustrated current offering that is selling with a sprue of either two British Vospers or two German S-Boot for Warlord Games` new `Cruel Seas` game.

Couldn`t help myself and here is a Type 1 Vosper in it`s first lashing of paint.

As there are no instructions with the WI issue, someone has already posted a useful vid on youtube.
Like this gentleman, I was immediately struck by the chunky mast on the Vosper and may retrospectively change this for a wire version as shown.

As if to prove that The Devil has all the best toys, here is the German S-100 series Schnellboot in primer.

Rather than go with the suggested armament, some quick research showed that fits could vary, so I retained the forward single 20mm and the twin 20mm amidships, but placed a 37mm aft.
Research also revealed that the only surviving S-Boot is currently being restored in the UK. S-130 participated in several actions against the Allies, including the tragic Slapton Sands disaster just before D-Day. Taken by the British with the defeat of Germany, it was tested then pressed into British service. In the early years of the Cold War, the British used it`s speed to spy on the Soviets around the Baltic, infiltrating agents, and using signals intelligence to eavesdrop on communications.

The model is sweet, and no bothersome masts. My one gripe is the same for the Vosper, the model is connected to the sprue right on the strakes, making clean-up a little more tricky than the join at the transom that is flat and easily sanded. A sharp knife and a steady hand may come in handy. But all-in-all, really nice model, bigger than the Vosper, looks the part more than the Vosper model I would say, and packing a wallop in game terms- it`s a bit of a beast. Looking forward to painting this one. ;)

There is no party like an S-Boot party; I went and got myself another WI.
This time, the top, unprimed S-100 has the quad 20mm.
